Beginning and Early Career Teachers
At Bellbird Park State Secondary College we invest heavily in our beginning and early career teachers. We use a multilayered approach to our support with many and various provisions. These include:
- Staff Retreat – this is an orientation for all staff who are new to the college, and allows them the opportunity to meet existing staff and hear from college leaders about programs and initiatives as well as the 'why' and journey to date in the establishment of the college.
- Mentor – this is a passionate teacher who regularly meets with their beginning/early career teacher to work through some of the unique questions and experiences during this career state. All our mentors have undergone (or will undergo) the formal Regional Mentoring Beginning Teacher Training.
- External mentoring program – 1:1 support through an external agency.
- In-house professional development – regular and timely scheduled and bespoke opportunities, usually focused around: literacy and numeracy signature practices, pedagogical framework, differentiation, Essential Skills for Classroom Management and transitioning from provisional to full teacher registration with the Queensland College of Teachers.
New Staff
Owing to the fact that we are still in the establishment phase of our college, and growing dramatically each year in both student and staff numbers, we have a number of provisions to support new staff commencing at the college, these include:
- Staff Retreat – this is an orientation for all staff who are new to the college and allows them the opportunity to meet existing staff and hear from college leaders about programs and initiatives as well as the 'why' and journey to date in the establishment of the college.
- Buddy – this is a colleague who is seated in close proximity in the staffroom who is keen and willing to answer questions as they arise.
- In-house professional development – regular and timely scheduled professional development to assist new staff to acquaint themselves with our college practices. These sessions focus on: literacy and numeracy signature practices, pedagogical framework, differentiation, Essential Skills for Classroom Management, Positive Behaviour for Learning, Pathways and Diverse Learners.
All Staff
Teacher growth is one of the areas we are really passionate about at the college. All our staff, irrespective of career stage and tenure belong to a Collaborative Learning Community which meets regularly to discuss, share and celebrate best practice. These communities are run by teacher facilitators and are a part of our staff meeting schedule.
Staff also engage in various collegial engagement observations across the year. These include: Classroom Observations (linked to Annual Performance Review) and Peer Observations.
